How To Tell Your PI You Are Switching Labs

Before you use this template, heed these general notes:
There is no harm in reaching out to other PIs to see if they have availability before leaving your current lab. See How To Join A Lab for more info on this!
If you semi-regularly meet with your PI and are generally on good terms, it might be better to meet in person to discuss your plan to switch labs. You can still use this formatting to help you prepare to have this conversation.
If you are switching labs to leave a lab environment you no longer want to be a part of, or are opposed to having an in-person conversation, a formal and neutral-toned email is perfectly acceptable!
Here is the template (feel free to tweak to your needs):
Subject: Update Regarding My Research Plans
Dear Dr. [PI Last Name],
I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to share an update regarding my research plans for the coming [semester/year]. After careful consideration, I have decided to transition to working with another research group ([Lab Name], if you wish to include it).
I am very grateful for the guidance, mentorship, and opportunity to work in your lab, particularly on [brief description of current project or area]. That experience has been invaluable to my development as a researcher. As I reflect on my longer-term academic and research goals, I have realized that I would like to gain more experience in [specific technique, methodology, or research focus], which aligns more closely with the work being conducted in the new lab.
Please let me know if there are any steps I should take to ensure a smooth transition, including documentation or procedures for transferring my current work to another member of the lab. I want to make this process as seamless as possible.
Thank you again for your support and understanding. I sincerely appreciate the time and mentorship you have provided.
Best regards,
[your name]
